Greek mythology is known these days primarily from Greek literature and representations on visual media coming from the geometric era from c. 900–800 BC onward. Actually, according Wikipedia, literary and archaeological sources intergrade, generally mutually supportive and generally in conflict ; but, in several cases, the existence with this corpus of knowledge is a robust indication that several components of greek mythology have sturdy factual and historical roots.

Nevertheless, the ultimate general mythographical handbook to firmly survive from greek antiquity was the library of pseudo-apollodorus. this work makes an attempt to firmly reconcile the contradictory tales of one's poets and provides a grand summary of ancient greek mythology and heroic legends. Apollodorus of athens lived from c. 180–120 bc and wrote on several of such topics. his writings can have formed the idea for our collection ; but the library discusses events that occurred long once his death, hence the name pseudo-apollodorus.
